Positive Behavioral Interventions & Supports (PBIS)
As a school district we are committed to using PBIS in order to better support our students in making appropriate choices. At Gabilan, we utilize SOAR as our positive intervention in order to equip our students with the tools they need to make the right decision.
We promote our students to always be Safe, On Task, Attitude and Achieve, and Respectful.
These are our guidelines for a positive classroom management system.
Failure to adhere to the norms will result in the following:
First Offence: Warning and emphasize proper behavior. (Student may be asked to model proper behavior depending on the misbehavior).
Second Offence: Student is given a final warning and charge with a fine. Student may be asked to reflect on positive behavior. If an additional offence is made, then they will be required to create a contract, which they will mention what they did and how can they correct it. It will also include specific plans for improvement, as to avoid being in this position again. (Parent/Guardian will be notified and the contract requires for the Parent/Guardian to sign and return to the teacher.)
Third Offence: Failure to comply with their contract will result in the student being asked to report to the Principal’s office in order to develop a new plan for proper behavior in the classroom. Parent/Guardian will be notified and asked to schedule a conference with the teacher and/or Principal.)
Logical Consequences: At Gabilan, we emphasize the importance of respect and care. This means we are required to treat others with respect and concern, which includes our classroom and school community. When a student’s behavior disrupts learning for the entire class, or creates an unsafe environment for others, it reveals that their actions have failed to convey their care and concern for others. Inasmuch as I believe that education is a tool for learning, I believe our logical consequence system seeks to educate students to become better citizens by making better choices. This is the reason why when a student interrupts learning or shows they are unwilling to collaborate with their teacher or others, he/she will be asked to take time out to reflect upon their actions and only be allowed to reintegrate into the class when they have resolved to contribute their best to the classroom environment. The point of this is for the student to reflect and realize the impact that their actions have on others and themselves, as well as develop positive strategies of participation with their peers in the classroom. (Parents/Guardians will be notified if their child is asked to step out of the classroom environment as a result of their behavior).
